Neighborhood Program

Neighborhood Program

The Florence Neighborhood Revitalization Plan was developed in 2014 by the City of Florence with input from residents to preserve, connect, and bridge some of the oldest gateway neighborhoods to downtown by restoring the vibrancy of these neighborhoods one block at a time.  The Florence Neighborhood Revitalization Plan is a comprehensive revitalization plan that will enhance the overall desirability of Florence as a place to live, increase the City's regional competitiveness, set the stage for catalytic development, and build off the recent success within and around the downtown area.

Neighborhood Planning

Healthy neighborhoods are vital to creating communities of lasting value.

With this tenet in mind, City Council and City staff have been working diligently to reinstitute neighborhood planning so that all City neighborhoods are thriving, vibrant places.

Starting with the City's core neighborhoods, the City has worked with citizens in three focus areas, since February 2012, to complete area action plans. The focus areas are North Florence, Northwest Florence and East Florence. These are some of the City's oldest and most challenged neighborhoods surrounding Downtown.

Issues like vacant and abandoned properties, neglectful property maintenance, and illegal activity must be improved in order for these areas to prosper. Therefore, in an effort to establish a revitalization plan that addresses these issues, the Neighborhood Action Plan was completed in January 2013. The plan is a result of the residents' concerns, and what they believe to be impediments to neighborhood vitality.

The overarching goal is to implement redevelopment and stabilization plans through tangible catalytic projects that significantly improve and enhance the North, Northwest and East Florence communities, thereby enhancing quality of life for the City of Florence. Revitalization in the News

Neighborhood Improvement Support

Homeowners within some areas of the City have formed neighborhood associations for the purpose of finding solutions to common concerns, and joining forces in making their neighborhoods better places to live. Various City departments, including Community Services, Planning and Police, serve these neighborhoods by attending neighborhood association meetings and acting as liaisons for neighborhood support. The end goal being that residents will feel empowered to voice their concerns about issues impacting their neighborhoods and take the proactive steps necessary to create desired change.

The City of Florence has also taken an active interest in neighborhood improvement by helping to generate a Neighborhood Action Plan and a Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy for some of the most challenged neighborhoods surrounding Downtown. Since February 2012, the City has worked with several neighborhood groups in order to determine the residents' issues and concerns.  Numerous meetings were held over time with those having a vested interest in neighborhood revitalization. Thoughts and desires captured during these meetings have culminated into City Council passing the Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy on December 8, 2014.
