Heartbreaking day for the City of Florence

FLORENCE, SC- Yesterday marked a heartbreaking day for the City of Florence and their families and friends.  Today in a news conference concluded at 2:30pm, Mayor Stephen J. Wukela conveyed his deepest sympathies to the officers of the Florence Police Department.  In particular, the Mayor spoke to the character of slain Sgt. Terrence Carraway giving recognition to his unique temperament, determination and humility for his service over the past 30 years. He also recognized the bravery of three fellow officers who also were injured in the active shooting incident. 

The Mayor commended and recognized the tremendous outpouring of support from the Florence community and others acknowledging that the continued support is essential to us healing first as a police department, as well as within the larger community. 

Services will be held for Sgt. Carraway at the Florence Center located at 3300 W. Radio Drive on Monday, October 8, 2018.  Viewing will be held from 9:00am-11:00am with service to follow at noon. 

The news conference included a statement by the City of Florence Chief of Police speaking to his thirty year friendship with Sgt. Carraway and to his support and concern regarding the members of the Florence Police Department.  The Chief accepted a number of questions from members of the media and was concluded shortly thereafter.

A candlelight vigil will be held tonight, October 4 beginning at 7:00pm at First Baptist Church, 300 S. Irby St, Florence, SC.
