FIREFIGHTING AS A CAREER

Firefighting in today's society is both challenging and exciting. Modern fire and rescue service offers a diverse array of technical and emergency response challenges which comprise a highly rewarding community service career. In addition to being highly trained fire and rescue personnel, many of our firefighters are also members of specialized branches of the Florence Fire Department, including the Dive Rescue and Recovery team, First Responder, and Haz Mat Technicians. Fire service personnel also are actively involved in the instruction of basic fire survival skills to City of Florence citizens. Most fire service personnel are certified in automobile extrication. If you're interested in becoming a City of Florence firefighter, you must meet the following minimum qualifications: be at least 21 years old, possess a high school diploma or GED, have a South Carolina driver's license, and have a good driving record. In addition, applicants also must have 20/20 vision or eyesight corrected to 20/25. There is no minimum or maximum requirement for height and weight; however, you must be in good health and physically fit. You must be of good character and reputation and must never have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.

Applicants who meet the above criteria must also pass a series of tests that includes both a written and oral skills exam, a physical ability test, a drug test, and a psychological examination.

Firefighters work a 24 hour shift on duty followed by a 48 hour period off duty. Qualified applicants will be placed on a waiting list and positions may be offered as vacancies arise.
